Some people come to Britain for the castles, the countryside or the history. I was ridiculously excited to go to Sainsbury’s.
I had a list of foods I missed and couldn’t easily get in New Zealand. Within minutes, I found a one-kilo box of Shreddies. A whole kilo! I stood there admiring it as though I’d discovered buried treasure.
Then I reached the vegetarian fridges and lost all sense of time. Back home, the veggie section seems to occupy about two square inches. Here, it went on and on. I started taking photos to show everyone in New Zealand just how much choice there was.
Anyone watching must have thought I was a wildlife photographer stalking a rare species. There I was, crouched by the chilled shelves, phone poised, waiting for a penguin to emerge from behind the veggie sausages.
I filled my basket with vegetarian food and, of course, Double Deckers. God, I love a Double Decker. I could happily have spent another hour exploring, although the prices brought me back to earth. Everything seemed to have gone through the roof since I was last here.
I’m now considering leaving all my clothes behind when I fly home and filling the suitcase with British food instead. Clothes can be replaced. A one-kilo box of Shreddies is an opportunity.
